English 10 Short Stories

All English 10 students must choose one short story to read from each of the three groups below, for a total of three short stories. All of the short stories can be found online and are also linked below.

ALL STUDENTS will be tested on the summer reading during the first THREE weeks of school.

• Group A
  • “The Open Window” by Saki (H. H. Munro)
  • “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe
  • “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

 

• Group B
  • “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan
  • “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” by Tim O’Brien
  • “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” by W. D. Wetherell

 

• Group C
  • “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe
  • “The Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket” by Jack Finney
  • “The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin
