Tennessee Graduation Requirements

 

Minimum Required Credits = 22

 

Math: 4 credits

  • Algebra – Standard or Honors
  • Geometry – Standard or Honors
  • Algebra II – Standard or Honors
  • Higher Level Math Course – Standard, Honors, Dual Enrollment or AP

 

English: 4 credits

  • English 9 – Standard or Honors
  • English 10 – Standard, Honors or Pre-AP
  • English 11 – Standard, Honors or AP
  • English 12 – Standard, Honors, Dual Enrollment or AP

 

Science: 3 credits

  • Lab Science
  • Biology – Standard or Honors
  • Chemistry or Physics – Standard or Honors

 

Social Studies: 3 credits

  • World History & Geography – Standard or Honors, AP Human Geography
  • US History & Geography – Standard, Honors or AP
  • Economics – Standard or AP
  • US Government – Standard or AP

 

Physical Education and Wellness: 1.5 credits

  • Lifetime Wellness
  • Physical Education

 

Personal Finance: 0.5 credits

 

Foreign Language: 2 credits of the same foreign language during high school (May be waived for students not going to a University to expand and enhance the elective focus)

 

Fine Arts: 1 credit (May be waived for students not going to a University to expand and enhance the elective focus)

 

Elective Focus: 3 credits in one focus area

 

ACT/SAT Exam: To receive a regular high school diploma, all students enrolled in a Tennessee public school during their eleventh-grade year must take either the ACT or SAT at least once by February of their twelfth-grade year.

 

Math, Science and Foreign Language credits earned in 8th grade only count as elective credits, not as required Math, Science or Foreign Language graduation requirements. 

 

Students must have 5 total credits and pass both semesters of English 9 to be promoted to the tenth grade.
