On Saturday, Bartlett’s boy’s cross country team achieved its final goal for the season by placing 5th in the State. The last time that a team from West Tennessee placed in the top 5 was in 2011.
Avery Wood led the top 5 Bartlett runners, who all finished within 22 seconds of each other. He was followed by Luke McNair, Jackson Williams, Benji Homeyer, and Brendan Hill. They each ran over a minute faster than the team from a year ago.
Closely behind the top 5 were Jason Hamilton and Travis Jones, Bartlett’s 6th and 7th runners who beat Houston’s and Arlington’s 3rd runners to the finish line. This overwhelming defeat was significant since Bartlett had not beaten Houston any time in school history until this year and since Arlington was the returning Region Champs.
Coach Gardner heaped praise on the team recognizing that 5th place puts Bartlett among the first tier teams in the state – a position that no boy’s cross country team from Memphis has been in for a while.
